READ ME This record contains crack measurement data and hydrological/meteorological data collected at the BIONICS Embankment Research Facility, Newcastle University. ======================== Changes to v3.0 ======================== 2020-08-18: hydrologoical and meteorological data between 30.05.2014 and 07.05.2015 have been added. ======================== Changes to v2.0 ======================== 2020-08-18: Dataset title changed ======================== Introductory information ======================== Files included in the data deposit 1) README_Crack volume.txt 2) Crack volume data.xlsx 3) Bionics AS1 hydrological data.csv 4) Bionics AS3 hydrological data.csv 5) Bionics daily ETo.csv 6) Bionics daily rainfall.csv 7) Bionics daily Relative humidity.csv 8) Bionics hourly ETo.csv 9) Bionics hourly Relative humidity.csv ================================================================== Explain the relationship between multiple data sets, if required: ================================================================== All the data are collected from the same setup using a weather station, rainfall gauge and a net radiometer. ===================================== Key words used to describe the data: ===================================== Embankment, desiccation cracking, field monitoring ========================== Methodological information ========================== Depending on the length of a particular crack, the width and depth were measured at two or more intervals, the points of measurement also referred to as “nodes” (Point A - E), being determined by factors such as curvature, change in width, secondary cracking, burrows etc. All measurements were maintained within accuracy of ±1mm. AS1 sensors are located on the lower (6m) halve of Bionics Panel A South. AS3 sensors are located on the upper (6m) halve of Bionics Panel A South. Data collected includes the following: Crack width Crack depth Crack length Rainfall Hourly ETo Hourly RH AS1 suction and volumetric water content AS3 suction and volumetric water content Instruments, hardware and software used: ========================================= Crack width: a 300mm rule and a Venire calliper. Crack depth: a flat flexible plastic probe (300-1000mm in length) Crack length: a fibre rope and metered tape. Rainfall: Campbell Scientific Evapotranspiration Monitoring Station Hourly ETo: Campbell Scientific Evapotranspiration Monitoring Station Hourly RH: Campbell Scientific Evapotranspiration Monitoring Station AS1 suction and volumetric water content: Decagon Devices 5TE, MPS1 and MPS2/6 AS3 suction and volumetric water content: Decagon Devices 5TE, MPS1 and MPS2/6 Datalogger: CR1000 Measurement and Control Datalogger, EM50 data logger Software: LoggerNet ============================ Date(s) of data collection: ============================ 30.05.2014 - 07.05.2015 ============================ Geographic coverage of data: ============================ Newcastle upon Tyne, UK Location of Bionics embankment: 54.986761, -1.901232 ================================================================ Data validation (how was the data checked, proofed and cleaned): ================================================================ Field survey of crack geometric data was carried out weekly.
