READ ME This text describes the data presented in the papers: 1) Investigating a conventional and retrofit power plant on-board a Roll-on/Roll-off cargo ship from a sustainability perspective – a life cycle assessment case study 2) Investigating the implications of a new-build hybrid power system for Roll-on/Roll-off cargo ships from a sustainability perspective - a life cycle assessment case study 3) ======================== Introductory information ======================== Files included in the data deposit (include a short description of what data are contained): 1) Input and output data used in creating LCA models for the marine power system under study - the conventional configuration design 2) Input and output data used in creating LCA models for the marine power system under study - the retrofit configuration design 3) Input and output data used in creating LCA models for the marine power system under study - the new-build configuration design Explain the relationship between multiple data sets, if required: Each power system consisted of a range of technology components. Life cycle phases of individual components covered manufacture, operation, maintenance (if relevant), dismantling and end of life management including recycling, disposal to incineration plants and landfill. Key words used to describe the data: Manufacturing; Operation; Recycling; Disposal to incineration plants; Disposal to landfill ========================== Methodological information ========================== A brief method description – what the data is, how and why it was collected or created, and how it was processed: The input and output data estimated throughout the life cycle of individual components, which were gathered and standardised from various sources including literature, Ecoinvent database, expert judgement from the industrial consortium, technical reports, textbooks, proceedings, product manuals and reviews. Instruments, hardware and software used: The LCA models were created using GaBi (version 6). Date(s) of data collection: 2014-2016 Geographic coverage of data: Europe or global, depending on data availability Data validation (how was the data checked, proofed and cleaned): The data were checked and verified via sensitivity analysis performed for all case studies. Overview of secondary data, if used: Only data relevant to emissions and fuel consumption were primary data. Other data were standardised from secondary sources. ========================= Data-specific information ========================= Definitions of names, labels, acronyms or specialist terminology uses for variables, records and their values: C Conventional system - The conventional power system consisted of main diesel engines, auxiliary generators, shaft generators, gearboxes, propellers, bow thrusters, thermal oil boilers and economisers N New-build system - The system consisted of diesel gensets, photovoltaic (PV) and lithium ion battery systems, cold–ironing facility, motor driven propellers, thrusters, transformers, variable frequency drives (VFDs), AC–AC converters, inverters and rectifiers. R Retrofit system - The conventional power system consisted of main diesel engines, auxiliary generators, shaft generators, power-take-off/power-take-in systems, gearboxes, propellers, bow thrusters, thermal oil boilers, economisers, photovoltaic (PV) and lithium ion battery systems and cold–ironing facility. Explanation of weighting and grossing variables: Not relevant. Outline any missing data: Data used in creating LCA models for case studies presented in the above-mentioned articles were comprehensively included in the file. Limitations of the case studies were reported in the articles. The research could be further improved by addressing such limitations and/or expanding the scope of the studies in future. ======= Contact ======= Please contact rdm@ncl.ac.uk for further information
