READ ME This text describes the data presented in the paper: ======================== Introductory information ======================== Files included in the data deposit (include a short description of what data are contained): 1) MF_visitors_questioncards.xlsx: Answers written down on question cards by Maker Faire visitors 2) WebData: Different texts captured from the official Maker Faire programme websites including descriptions of the event, the venues and the exhibiting makers. We also provided a comparison spreadsheet how the makers were categorised at each event. 3) Exhibitor-reflections: Transcribed reflections of the "Making Useful Stuff" exhibitors 4) Media: Different public media accounts that reported on Maker Faire Explain the relationship between multiple data sets, if required: - Key words used to describe the data: qualitative data capturing different stakeholder accounts ========================== Methodological information ========================== A brief method description – what the data is, how and why it was collected or created, and how it was processed: Our study involved direct participation in two Maker Faire events (Maker Faire UK 2018 and Maker Faire Vienna 2018) which helped us to collect data, sensitise our analysis and shape our understanding of the results. We organised a maker stall that was part exhibition and part hands-on activity about crafting electronics. This activity involved creating an electronic button from a wide range of tinkering materials we provided for free. This let us invite the Maker Faire audience to engage with us in an active way. After building the button the participants had the chance to test their creations with a Raspberry Pi powered ÕMaker GuestbookÕ, an interactive documentation system. To take part in our study visitors would choose a card with a question printed on, write down an answer, connect their self-built button to the Maker Guestbook and press it to take a photo of everything. We included 30 questions of three different categories regarding (i) the participantsÕ maker identities, values, aspirations and purposes (eg. What difference has Making made for you?), (ii) the support they needed for pursuing their Making (eg. Imagine your worst making nightmare. What does it look like?), and (iii) their reflections on Maker Faire itself (eg. What have you learned from attending Maker Faire?). The question cards were colour-coded accordingly. The data collection went beyond just the visitorsÕ reflections and our own participant observations as exhibitors. It also consisted of many additional written, audio-recorded or photographic accounts produced before, during or after the Maker Faire events. The official event websites and social media accounts provided information about how the organisers framed their event and which kinds of maker projects were showcased. The descriptions of the exhibitor stalls in the program were written by the participating makers themselves and shed light on their respective practices and agendas. Accounts from professional and amateur media complemented our collection of different first-hand voices. These included reports for public service TV or Make Magazine, interviews recorded for community radio and reviews in form of blogposts and podcasts. Our own participant observations as exhibitors were captured in form of written reflections and audio-recorded group discussions. Using spreadsheets and text editing software, we processed the collected data in the same way for both events to assure the sets were as consistent and comparable as possible.
