The integration of the field trials in the SmartHubs SLES demonstrator project with the desktop modelling and simulation carried out by Newcastle University will broadly follow a method outlined in the paper by Lyons et al. Using our experience from a previous large smart grids project, the Customer-Led Network Revolution, we have adopted the trials methodology that was developed during this programme. Under the banner of “programmatic smart grid trials design”, the “VEEEG” method – validation, extension, extrapolation, enhancement and generalisation – provides a method for constructing field trials that can be extended through computer simulation.
