Beàrnaraigh was a work recorded in June 2018 on the small Outer Hebridean island of Beàrnaraigh Mor; it sits in Loch Roag off the west coast of Lewis & Harris in the Outer Hebrides. At four miles by three miles, it has a heavily indented coastline, and its topography is generally rough grass and heather on peaty soils with frequent rocky outcrops and low hills to a maximum height of 87m.

My idea was to produce a presentation of an island and of a day. Between the 9th and 28th June 2018 I made four static recordings over three days that together covered a period of 24 hours and I made 17 walking recordings across eight days that together spanned from 06:27 to 17:45. Static recordings were made in a small copse about 100 metres from the property where I was staying. Together the walking recordings presented a circumnavigation of the island. I used these recordings to compose a virtual day of 24 hours containing a (near) circumferential walk of the island shore (the north-east and south-east corners were inaccessible). Static recordings appeared in all 24 hours of the composition and walking recordings appeared in 12. There was a small amount of overlap in the static recordings; there was more overlap in the walking recordings with two recordings playing together much of the time and, on occasion, up to four recordings (around 14:30). This is the recording from 14:00 to 15:00.

This work is one of six selected for submission alongside my PhD thesis. Many of the other works discussed in my thesis can be found through my website ( https://martinpeccles.com ) or Soundcloud ( https://soundcloud.com/mpeccles).
