Mouse fetuses (collected in accordance with UK Home Office Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986) were fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde and scanned by magnetic resonance imaging.
Human fetuses were obtained from the MRC/Wellcome-Trust funded Human Developmental Biology Resource maintained at Newcastle University (www.hdbr.org), and processed for micro-CT imaging.
Data were opened in Amira Imaging software and saved as AmiraMesh files. These files were segemented to produce the three-dimensional images shown in the paper.
