Tinnitus is the perception of sound, such as ringing or buzzing, in the absence of an external source. It is often associated with changes in auditory sensitivity. Some individuals with tinnitus may experience hyperacusis, a heightened sensitivity to everyday sounds that are normally considered tolerable. This altered sound tolerance suggests that tinnitus is not just an isolated symptom but may reflect broader changes in how the brain processes auditory information. Our results reveal that auditory sensitivity in tinnitus does not vary when the degree of hyperacusis are similar and the distress naturally reduces over time from its onset.
